The world adds a third terawatt of solar power

It took 68 years since Bell Labs invented the silicon solar cell in 1954 to reach 1 terawatt (TW), enough to supply the US electric grid. From 2022 to 2024, a second TW was added; in 2026 a third TW. 9 TW is expected by 2036 (more in underdeveloped countries). Half of all installed PV power is in China.
