If a $20,000 rooftop solar array is beyond the budget, hard to install, or difficult to permit, a DIY plug-in balcony solar panel can power home appliances and devices cheaper than the grid. Popular in Europe, 100-W balcony panels are similar to camping or cabin units. A 200-W kit can cost $400 with 120-V plug to connect to the home electrical system.
