To counter $80,000/ton lithium prices, $300/ton sodium-ion batteries are being developed. Heavier than Li with lower energy density, Na is also plentiful, chemically similar, and easily accessible (e.g., in seawater). Na-ion cells work at low temperatures, handle more cycles, and don't use Co or Ni. CATL and BYD plan to mix Li-ion and Na-ion cells in new EVs.
