Belgium faces winter blackouts amid nuclear reactor shutdowns

“Concrete degradation” at the Tihange nuclear plant near Liege forced 3 reactors to close at the same time 4 more were out for repairs at the Doel plant near Antwerp, accounting for 40% of the grid. If temperatures drop and electrical demand spikes, a “load shedding” plan will shut off motorway lights, curtail industrial production, and begin rolling blackouts.
