Climate change: 'Sand battery' could solve green energy's big problem

Finnish engineers installed the world’s first commercial sand battery that heats to 500 °C with cheap electricity from solar or wind. The heated sand – 100 tonnes of low-grade builder’s sand piled in a dull grey silo at the Vatajankoski power plant – warms homes in winter when electricity is more expensive and helps manage intermittency in a greening grid.
