UCSD computer scientists received a $39-million grant to build a novel testbed to integrate distributed energy sources into the grid. Solar panels, wind turbines, smart buildings and EV batteries aren’t as stable as natural-gas plants and thus power-grid balancing is needed. DERConnect will be a campus-wide microgrid of 2,500 DERs and 300 EV charging stations.
