| Ireland | renewables: biofuel
Citing global warming, the Irish government announced that the state peat-harvesting company Bord na Móna would close 17 "active bogs" and phase out its other 45 in the next 7 years. Peat (or turf) has been a fuel since the 1930s, but is worse than coal, emitting more GHGs and generating less energy. Plentiful global bogs also act as important carbon sinks.
