As more wind and solar comes online, electricity generation exceeds demand at various times of the day, creating subzero costs. Peak midday sun around noon and early morning wind gusts or cloud cover push coal and gas plants to shut down, not an original design feature. California had 110 hours of negative power prices in the "day-ahead" market.
