At the UN General Assembly, U.S. President Eisenhower gives his Atoms for Peace speech, proposing an international atomic energy agency on nuclear power and suggesting a conversion of uranium weapons stockpiles to fissionable reactor fuel to "hasten the day when fear of the atom will begin to dissapear from the minds of the people."
